"Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future." - Paul Boose

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

On January 21, 2023, a suspect was arrested for violation of article 308 of the revised penal code of the Philippines. We took our chance to observe the process of inquest proceedings of the Person Under Police Custody. The suspect was brought to the Intelligence section for tactical interrogation, where his personal circumstances were asked by the investigators they are validating if the suspect was telling the truth about his identity and checked with the other stations if he had previous crimes committed in different places. After everything was validated, the suspect was brought to the office of the Prosecutors together with the victim for an inquest proceeding. An inquest proceeding is a brief, informal inquiry carried out by the public prosecutor in a criminal case involving people who were taken into custody without a court-issued arrest warrant to determine whether they should be kept in jail and subsequently prosecuted in court. The time we arrived at the office of the prosecutor, the victim was very silent and she seems anxious, the prosecutor began explaining both sides of their rights and ensures that both sides were not forced into the process of making their affidavits, but the victim stopped and stood then approached the prosecutor and saying that she does not want to file the complaint against the suspect. The prosecutor immediately explained her right to file an affidavit of resistance and to file a motion to withdraw the complaint.

In my own perception, I feel bad for the arresting officer, it seems that his efforts in responding to the incident were not given a credit, we all know that it is not easy to capture criminals and it takes a lot of time and planning to capture violators of the law if ever the culprit were not caught then the victim will always blame the law enforcers for not doing their job right. But I cannot blame the victim if she got a soft heart to forgive easily the culprit and I do believe that everyone has the right to have second chances. To the culprit, it will serve as his lesson and a reminder to quit his illegal doings and to live life fairly, living without aggrieving others' life. One mistake is enough to serve as a lesson, one mistake can ruin everything you prepared for the future.

In conclusion, even if one mistake might teach us a valuable lesson, it's important to recognize that our mistakes can have a variety of negative consequences. It is essential to make our decisions with caution and to be aware of the potential outcomes of our actions because even one mistake can have a significant influence on our life. By taking responsibility for our choices and learning from our mistakes, we can become more resilient and better equipped to achieve our goals. A single mistake can have a ripple effect that impacts other areas of our lives. So that later on, I understood the point of view of the victim, and why she did not pursue filing a case against the perpetrator.
