“ Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage” -Richard Lovelace

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

A conversation with Person Under Police Custody

Richard Lovelace said, “ stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage”[1] being prisoned does not limit a person to keep on dreaming of his desires and ambition in this world. His physical body may be locked up, and his mind, soul, and thoughts are never put behind bars. It is not too late to change himself to become the new person that he always dreamt of, a prison that thinks that his life will end up in prison, and no other solution, no other escape, that kind of person is a prison that whether inside the jail or not, because he quit on dreaming, he quit on believing on second chances if a person stops on believing, he will hinder and limit himself on what he thinks of what he is.

During my stay in the Police Station in which we were immersed, the first thing that you will see when you enter the station is the PUPC (Person Under Police Custody), at first, I felt uneasy whenever I passed the cells of the PUPC for the reason that we don’t even know what crime they have committed why are they prisoned. That is why, one day when we were already done observing at the station, and yet the day is so young, I decided to start a conversation with the PUPC, at first I was nervous about conversing with them but as started introducing myself to them and then, they become more interactive, also they introduced their names to me one by one and telling why they are prisoned and suddenly one of the PUPC, started sharing his life and he shares that before he got lost in his track he also dreamt of being one of the long maroon line, but unfortunately he failed to become one but he continues his dream of becoming policemen by studying criminology in college, but he got lost in the track of his life, he committed theft, due to poverty, to sustain his needs and to sustain their daily expenses.

Person Under Police Custody are also humans, they need also to be treated with respect, no matter what have they done, they are also humans and deserved to be given second chances and not be judged quickly until you know their true story to tell. These individuals all maintained a strong sense of self-confidence even despite the excessive number of failures and suffering, and they definitely didn't have it easy. It is important for every single one of us to actively strive to promote equality and treat all people equally. This needs awareness, a determination to confront our own biases, and a desire to speak out against discrimination when we witness it. Continue to believe in yourself despite what happens or what others may say. Strive to achieve your objectives by pushing forward. Even if it often feels like a lifetime, the miracle does happen.

Life is full of challenges and opportunities. Sometimes, we take advantage of these opportunities, and other times we let them slip by. When we make mistakes, it can be easy to feel defeated and hopeless, but it's important to remember that second chances exist. Second chances are opportunities to correct our past mistakes, learn from them, and move forward. They give us the opportunity to correct past mistakes, learn from them, and move forward in a positive direction. Second chances provide us with the chance to make things right and to become the best versions of ourselves. So, next time you find yourself faced with a mistake, remember that second chances exist and that it's never too late to make things right.
